Seattle, WA - Three Pacific Northwest musicians from Seattle, Snohomish and North Bend have joined forces in an effort to create community and celebrate a fusion of traditional American and Native American music. These musicians will be playing together in a special concert on Wednesday, January 19, 2005 at 8:00 PM, at Mr. Spot's Chai House in central Ballard, 5463 NW Leary Way, Seattle, WA 98107 (206) 297-2424.
The concept for the concert came to Dillon after listening to Peter Ali's gorgeous improvisational Native flute music at the Hotwire Coffee House in Shoreline. "I was completely transported by Peter's music," she said. "Then he described the efforts he and his wife, Tammy Kennedy are making to teach and preserve this musical tradition in their home town of Snohomish. Immediately, I thought of connecting them with my friend, Bob Antone, who is doing similar work in North Bend." She contacted Antone and Ali and plans for this concert were underway. Dillon, an Oklahoma native of English/Black Irish/French heritage, has long felt a strong affinity for Native American music and culture. "This seemed like an ideal opportunity to share our love for traditional music, to let people know about opportunities for learning traditional Native American music and to create a sense of community among musicians from various parts of the Northwest", Dillon said.
Fiddler/song catcher/historian Bob Antone, who was featured in the November 2004 Victory Review cover story, "Northwest Roots Music: What Is It?" comes from a North Bend logging family and is involved in several musical projects involving fusion of traditional American and Native American music. He performs regularly with Ray Mullen (Drum Bearer for the Snoqualmie Tribe) and with Swil Kanim (Lummi folk violinist and actor in Sherman Alexie's film The Business of Fancydancing). "I have discovered that many of the rhythms of the hobo songs my own grandfather sang keep overlapping with the ancient Native rhythms of my region," says Antone. "With the approval of the Snoqualmie Elders, we set up jam sessions and we keep finding this overlap phenomenon again and again."
Mr. Spot's Chai House is an all-ages venue and there is no charge for the concert although donations for the musicians are welcomed. Also participating in the concert will be members of the Snoqualmie Tribe from North Bend. Please come join us in creating some exciting regional, traditional and musical synergy!
